Like Totally Whatever...
In case you hadn’t noticed,
it has somehow become uncool
to sound like you know what you’re talking about?
Or believe strongly in what you’re saying?
Invisible question marks and parenthetical (you know?)’s
have been attaching themselves to the ends of our sentences?
Even when those sentences aren’t, like, questions? You know?
Declarative sentences - so-called
because they used to, like, DECLARE things to be true
as opposed to other things which were, like, not -
have been infected by a totally hip
and tragically cool interrogative tone? You know?
Like, don’t think I’m uncool just because I’ve noticed this;
this is just like the word on the street, you know?
It’s like what I’ve heard?
I have nothing personally invested in my own opinions, okay?
I’m just inviting you to join me in my uncertainty?
What has happened to our conviction?
Where are the limbs out on which we once walked?
Have they been, like, chopped down
with the rest of the rain forest?
Or do we have, like, nothing to say?
Has society become so, like, totally …
I mean absolutely … You know?
That we’ve just gotten to the point where it’s just, like …
whatever!
And so actually our disarticulation … ness
is just a clever sort of … thing
to disguise the fact that we’ve become
the most aggressively inarticulate generation
to come along since …
you know, a long, long time ago!
I entreat you, I implore you, I exhort you,
I challenge you: To speak with conviction.
To say what you believe in a manner that bespeaks
the determination with which you believe it.
Because contrary to the wisdom of the bumper sticker,
it is not enough these days to simply QUESTION AUTHORITY.
You have to speak with it, too.
A Poem By Taylor Mali

"You never know how much you really believe a thing until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life & death to you." - C.S. Lewis
Ponder that for a moment. Each and everyday we live as if we still have plenty of time to do this or that. We make excuses to put off tomorrow what God wants us to do today, to put off confessing sins, to put off sharing our faith, and doing a good deed for someone. I know myself I often make the excuse, “oh I don’t need to worry about that now, I’ll be in ministry in a few years.” …Wow, am I full of crap.
Anyway I saw this as a tweet by John Piper today. If you are not following him on Twitter I highly recommend. Not only did this quote by the great apologist C.S. Lewis prompt me to think about what I should be doing today, but it really made me think of prayer and praise and worship. I don’t think I earnestly pray to and worship God like today was my last. Let’s face it though today may very well be my last, I don’t know what the future holds. James 4 says we are but a vapor in time and no one is promised tomorrow.
Ironic how we have a hard time believing God’s true promises for our lives and yet believe we are promised tomorrow when we are not. Live like your belief in Christ was a matter of life and death. Praise God and pray to him like you are in a POW camp with a gun to your head and God very well is your only way out. Because the truth is, our life is like that every single day. Satan, the enemy has us at gunpoint, feeding us lies and holding us captive, wanting nothing more than for us to denounce our salvation. We can’t win the war to fight for our life if we don’t call our Father for reinforcements.

What Truly Breaks My Heart

I think you can truly get to know someone deep inside their heart, mind, in soul, by two things; what they find entertaining, and what breaks their heart. Now I won’t argue that you can truly get to know a person by other or more means. But I would argue that these two issues reveal their true heart in relation to God. Now it’s no one’s place to judge but you can pretty much discern a person’s faith and relationship in Christ is not where it should be when worldly fun or desires of the flesh entertain them. This could include anything from adultery or drunkenness, to gossip or television that certainly is not Godly material. I will even admit myself my spiritual life is not where it should be as I struggle with lust, lying, envy, sexual jokes I make at times, pride, and my own entertainment choices on television. Imagine though, just how different and God Glorifying our lives would be if our hearts were actually centered on God. This kind of life can never come out of simply trying to avoid sin, it doesn’t even come from legalistic and ritualistic living, it comes out of love. We see this in John 14:15 when Christ says “If you love me, you will obey what I command.” He continues later saying in verses 23 and 24; “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”

In this day and age it has become so easy to pretend to be spiritual and to have a relationship with God. If we truly treat God as a relationship we will do what he commands out of our dear love for Him. An adulterous wife does not truly 100% love her husband. The same applies for us. If we loved Christ as much as we claim to we would not deliberately and knowingly disobey Him. Now as we read in Romans no one is righteous except for Jesus Christ. The difference however lies in if we legitimately admit to our transgressions, are sincerely apologetic and turn away from what we have done. There is a danger today in hiding our sins from ourselves in our own denial, and hiding them from those who can help hold us accountable. There is also a danger in not holding each other accountable. Hebrews 10:24–25 says; “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” I don’t believe we do this as often as we should or in a Godly manner. Often times the matters are ignored and we allow our brothers and sisters to continue in their destructive behavior. And more often than not I think when someone earnestly expresses concern and confronts another’s sin, the person confronted is not humbled and claims the other person is judging them. In many times this may actually be the case. I would argue though with our rebellious nature we are not always open to our convictions.

To be open to our convictions and admitting our sins, to have your heart broken for what breaks God’s, and to have the courage to hold a brother accountable reveals our great love for our Father. It breaks my heart when I reject convictions on myself, and it certainly breaks my heart to see friends blatantly reject God’s commands. We are trading in our own morals for a spur of fun and chasing unGodly desires. What Would Jesus Do? and Glorify God are not just some catchy slogans. If you can’t say that what you are doing is what Christ would do or that it is God honoring, don’t do it. And believe me I am certainly speaking to myself in this matter. We can’t continue to worship God on Sundays and spit in his face on Mondays. My prayers go out to all whose lives are not reflecting their faith. And I hope we all have the courage to build up one another.

Is Blogging obsolete or irrelevant?

So almost a year ago I started my own blog. It chronicled my faith and walk in the Lord and for me was a way to share some things about my life, my faith, opinions, fun stuff, and all around what I would like to share with people but normally would not be able to. Well before that, in my very early high school career I had a blog on a site known as Xanga. That was my very first experience with a blog or any online network. That didn’t last too long before I joined Myspace and then Facebook and then I left Myspace because Facebook was “cleaner” in a sense.
Well the blog I had last year didn’t really last long. Only 3 or 4 people followed and I didn’t think it was worth it. Facebook seemed to make a blog obsolete. Why would I move to a separate site to blog when I could do that and more on Facebook right? While Facebook does have all those features it seems like its only living off of the microblogging concept like Twitter. Only, facebook can post more than 140 characters. I want to blog though. I have stuff I want to share in a way Facebook just falls short, if only status updates are given attention. Another thing though, am I being vain in wanting to have a blog? I honestly don’t have an answer to that.
So I’d like your feedback. Do you think blogging is worthwhile anymore because of Facebook and Twitter? Do you think I should keep a blog? And do you think blogging is vain? I will actually consider answers to that last question and whether I keep a blog or not will depend on what responses I get.

UPDATE: I originally started the new blog on Tumblr, couldn't get comments enabled and quickly came back to my old blog site. I now have comments on Tumblr and the page design is much better. Ignore this site and go to the http://mattharmon.tumblr.com/ I would still enjoy feedback on the matter of blogging though.
